Happy spring! Welcome to the April/May 2026 national issue of La Scena Musicale, with a special focus on the voice! This issue also includes our annual guides to Canadian spring festivals, summer studies and choirs. Tenor Russell Thomas, who is making his debut in the title role of the Canadian Opera Company’s Werther, graces our English edition while our French cover features Mexican tenor Arturo Chacón-Cruz as he debuts at Opera de Montréal as Don José in Carmen.
As well, we meet Quebec soprano Elisabeth Boudreault who makes her Opéra de Québec debut as Musetta in La bohème, and groundbreaking singer Teiya Kasahara. We take a peek at Opera 5’s intriguing new trilogy as part of the 2026 Toronto Opera Festival. In terms of technical aspects related to the voice, we chat with ENT Françoise Chagnon and singer/speech therapist Ariane Martel.
Our choir section profiles Ensemble Scholastica, Choeur Les Voix de la montagne and Voce Borealis, and includes our Choral Calendar.
The Art of Living section offers a word-search puzzle with an opera-singer theme, and our latest La Scena a tavola features Montreal tenor and chef, Davide Bazzali.
As a tribute to May’s Asian Heritage Month we showcase two composers—Alice Ping Yee Ho and Dinuk Wijeratne—sharing their inspirations and influences.
Our annual spring-festivals section highlights Festival Classica and their concert production of the musical Notre-Dame de Paris, as well as Prin-temps Slaves festival’s 2026 focus on the Belle Époque.
Also featured are Prix d’Europe, Idées heureuses, Jordi Savall, Minna Re Shin, La Nef, Clavecin en concert, Quatuor Molinari and the use of Leitmotif in film music.
Calendar
Our national-events calendar presents concert listings from your local region. Due to space limitations, listings are summarized. Readers are invited to consult our online calendar at www.mySCENA.org to explore more extensive listings sorted by region across Canada, with the benefit of a search tool. More than 800 concerts are added each month, making the La Scena Musicale calendar of events Canada’s most comprehensive classical music calendar!
Subscription and Donation Drive
Starting September 2026, La Scena Musicale will be celebrating its 30th anniversary!
For the occasion, we are preparing a series of book magazines on Giacomo Puccini, Gustav Mahler and Handel’s Messiah to coincide with recent and upcoming landmark anniversaries. The goal is to highlight the historical significance of these great artists and their music. We will be launching a crowdfunding campaign for the Puccini book magazine to help cover production costs. Your support will go a long way to make this a reality!
La Scena Musicale has evolved with changing media consumption habits while also maintaining its core mission—to make music and the arts more widely accessible to all. Our print magazine provides thoughtful curated articles and interviews in both English and French, along with our website which focuses on news, reviews and events.
Throughout 2026, our goal is to continue expanding both our print and digital content. We have many talented writers and want to ensure that their diverse voices are heard. Frequent price increases of magazine paper, however, are a cause for concern. Consider supporting the magazine through a donation, a bequest in your will (legacy-giving) and/or by joining our fundraising committee. Contact us at [email protected].
Other ways to support La Scena Musicale’s mission is through the LSM Boutique at mySCENA.org, where items like musically-themed greeting cards and tickets to our partners’ events are available for purchase. To ensure receiving all of our annual issues, please buy a La Scena Musicale magazine subscription. Subscriptions also make ideal gifts throughout the year for loved ones including the student, parent and/or artist in your life.
La Scena Musicale maintains an active presence on social media (Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn). Our website is updated daily with new and engaging content—visit www.myscena.org.
May your life blossom with more music during the spring season!
