Montreal, Wednesday, March 18, 2026 – Orchestre Métropolitain (OM) and Opéra de Montréal (OdM) are proud to announce the official launch of their artistic partnership, sealing a long-standing relationship between two leading institutions in Montreal’s and Canada’s cultural life.
Developed over more than twenty years of collaboration, this relationship now enters a new, structuring phase, with a shared commitment to strengthening artistic, human, and institutional ties between the two organizations.
“The collaboration between Orchestre Métropolitain and Opéra de Montréal is rooted in shared values: openness, innovation, and respect. We share the conviction that by building on our respective strengths, we can truly serve artists and audiences. For more than twenty years, we have developed a privileged relationship of trust with OM and its Music Director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin. Today, we wish to formalize this association between our two institutions and lay the foundations for a partnership that will allow our organizations to continue to thrive side by side.”
– Jean-Pierre Primiani, General Director, Opéra de Montréal
As part of this agreement, Opéra de Montréal commits to offering Orchestre Métropolitain a minimum of three productions per season over the next three years, paving the way for large-scale projects and a deepening of artistic and educational collaboration, particularly in relation to training and the development of emerging artists. This partnership will foster increased exchanges in artistic training by creating bridges between the Atelier lyrique of Opéra de Montréal and the Orchestre Métropolitain’s Orchestral Conducting Academy, thereby contributing to the growth and professional development of the next generation.
For Orchestre Métropolitain, this official announcement recognizes a collaboration already deeply embedded in artistic practice and in the daily work of both teams.
“After years of natural and deeply organic collaboration, it became clear that formalizing a partnership rooted in essential and shared values was the logical next step, with constant attention to both artists and audiences. The relationship we have built with Opéra de Montréal is unique, sustained by longstanding trust and genuine artistic rapport. Yannick Nézet-Séguin plays a central role, as do the musicians, who approach opera with the same passion and commitment as the symphonic repertoire. This is an alliance in the service of artists and audiences.”
– Fabienne Voisin, CEO, Orchestre Métropolitain

A First Emblematic Project: Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss
After more than thirty years of absence from Montreal stages, this masterpiece of the operatic repertoire returns in an exceptional interpretation. At once nostalgic for Viennese waltzes and inspired by Mozartian comedy, Strauss unfolds music of striking elegance and expressive power. This monumental work symbolically seals the partnership between the two institutions.
For the occasion, Yannick Nézet-Séguin brings together an outstanding international cast, making this event a true generational milestone.
Confirmed cast:
- Diana Damrau, Marschallin
- Emily D’Angelo, Octavian
- Erin Morley, Sophie
- Peter Rose, Baron Ochs
- Thomas Ebenstein, Valzacchi
- Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Conductor
All have embodied these roles on the world’s greatest stages, from New York to Milan, and their interpretations are now considered definitive. Several other leading Canadian and international voices will join this exceptional production.
