Writing for Vibraphone

In this masterclass, we explore different approaches to composition for this versatile instrument.

Why do we compose? How can we create a rich, full sound with the limitation of just four mallets?

We will discuss when traditional harmonic rules can strengthen a composition, as well as when they can be deliberately ignored. We will also explore extended techniques, focusing on bowing and pitch bending, and analyse how these approaches can be used effectively in different musical contexts.
